"Where to Hunt" web pages provide invaluable assistance

The first step in planning that next successful hunt might be to check out the trove of detailed information that’s just a few clicks away on the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s (AZGFD) website.

Visit https://www.azgfd.com/hunting/where-to-hunt/. Once there, hunters can select the area they wish to hunt (AZGFD divides the state into six geographical regions), then drill down further by choosing any of several Game Management Units (GMUs) located within that region.

Much of the information is updated annually by the department’s wildlife managers — and who better to get the real hunting “scoop” from than the professionals who spend countless hours in the field?

What hunters can expect to find listed for each GMU:

GMU boundaries and land administration.
Species information.
Average number of hunt permit-tags issued over the past five years.
Climate information (monthly average temperatures, rainfall, snowfall).
Nearest major cities and towns, campgrounds, and nearest gas, food and lodging.
Brief descriptions of terrain, elevation and vegetation.
Government agencies and phone numbers.
Landscape maps that provide back road and back country detail. Maps use shaded relief and different colors to denote land cover and administrative boundaries.
Any special notices.
