Events will Celebrate Juneteenth, the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled and Baseball.
The Library of Congress Family Days series on select Saturdays offers an exciting slate of events for June, July and August focused on Juneteenth, library services for blind people, and baseball. Program partners include the Library’s American Folklife Center, the Manuscript Division, the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled and the Washington Nationals.
Each Family Day includes a creative activity, connections to Library of Congress collections, a chance to talk to staff experts and a guide to using relevant Library resources at home. In addition, families and visitors can explore the various exhibitions on view in the Library’s Jefferson Building.
Programming Highlights
June Family Day:Juneteenth
On June 21, commemorate Juneteenth with a program focused on the themes of family and home. Create a fabric quilt square, hear local quilt artist Sandra Smith talk about her work and explore quilting collections from the American Folklife Center. Join bestselling and award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes to hear about her new middle grade novel, "Will's Race for Home,"setduring the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. Meeta staff expert from the Manuscript Division, and learn about items from the Library’s Abraham Lincoln Papers.
Activities will be held on the mezzanine level of the Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21. The event is free, but timed-entry passes are required to enter the Jefferson Building. Register for free tickets.
July Family Day: Discover the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled
On July 19, staff from the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled at the Library of Congress will present a range of materials and activities to show the many ways in which they serve patrons and their families. Experience the Jefferson Building through the Visitor Engagement Office’s signature hands-on Touch History tours and displays.
Activities will be held on the mezzanine level of the Library’s Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. The event is free, but timed-entry passes are required to enter the Jefferson Building. Register for free tickets.
August Family Day: Baseball
On Aug. 9, take part in a fun-filled program celebrating America’s national pastime. Create your own player persona by crafting a baseball card, explore items from the Library’s extensive baseball holdings and meet representatives from the Washington Nationals. See the Racing President mascots when they stop by for a look at their personal collections at the Library.
