One fugitive was wanted for attempted murder

SAN DIEGO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the ports of entry along the California border with Mexico over the weekend intercepted 1,500 pounds of narcotics valued at more than $3.3 million and captured 17 fugitives.

From Fri, Aug. 4, through Sun, Aug. 6, CBP officers intercepted more than 470 pounds of methamphetamine, 72 pounds of cocaine, over 1,000 pounds of marijuana and 11 pounds of heroin. CBP officers discovered the narcotics hidden inside vehicles in various places such as the vehicle’s floor, fenders, doors, tires and quarter panels.

LAS VEGAS — U.S. Customs and Border Protection has deployed facial recognition biometric exit technology to McCarran International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas for one daily flight from the United States to Guadalajara, Mexico. The deployment builds upon a June 2016 pilot at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using facial recognition. CBP recently deployed the technology to Washington Dulles International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Future deployments are planned for additional airports this summer.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP BUTLER, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 8, 2017 — Three U.S. Marines have been declared deceased after extensive search-and-rescue efforts when an MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft entered the water off the coast of the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, Queensland, Australia, the evening of Aug. 5.

The U.S. Justice Department has seized the largest criminal marketplace on the Internet, AlphaBay, which operated for over two years on the dark web and was used to sell deadly illegal drugs, stolen and fraudulent identification documents and access devices, counterfeit goods, malware and other computer hacking tools, firearms, and toxic chemicals throughout the world. The international operation to seize AlphaBay’s infrastructure was led by the United States and involved cooperation and efforts by law enforcement authorities in Thailand, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France, as well as the European law enforcement agency Europol.
