Rim Country Fishing Report Jan.17, 2015
Good morning Rim Country Anglers. The water flow into Roosevelt Lake increased significantly this past week due the rains earlier in the week. The Tonto Creek is flowing at 300 percent of its normal rate while the Salt River is flowing at 120 percent. The water level of the lake remained at 42 percent full but the water surface temperatures continued to fall and are in the low 50s.
The 50-degree temperature is significant since most experts agree that the bass metabolism slows significantly when ambient water temperatures fall below 50 degrees. This cooler temperature means fish don't feed actively and can skip entire days without feeding if needed.
This time of year it’s important to fish slowly using baits that don't have to move very far. A dropshot and a Texas rig technique or a jig bait sitting on the bottom was reported successful this past week. Keep in mind that some fish will be more active in deeper water where a casting spoon will be successful and some bass like to stay in more shallow water where the water temperature will be warmer on sunny days. Shallow bass will react to shad imitation crankbaits or jerkbaits.
Crappie anglers are still struggling on Roosevelt Lake. A few successful crappie anglers reported to be trolling a small jig in 20-30 feet depths. A small hook is required for crappie fishing, and for the trolling technique, a moderate to slow action fishing rod is a must.
Roads, lakes and streams up on the Rim are starting to close due to weather conditions. If you're planning a trip up north, check road conditions and call local business owners in the area you plan to visit to get the latest conditions.
