Eight invites viewers to special debut of long-awaited Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock: Season 3, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman

WHAT: It’s been two years since the events of The Reichenbach Fall in the Season 2 finale of Sherlock when the renowned sleuth presumably died, but Sherlock Holmes is about to rise from the grave. Eight, Arizona PBS welcomes Sherlockians to get the jump on the nationwide premiere of the highly-anticipated Sherlock: Season 3, airing Jan. 19 at 9 p.m. on Eight, with an exclusive free preview screening of episode one “The Empty Hearse,” at Eight, Arizona PBS Studio A at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 – ten days before it airs.

Eight offers viewers a first look at Sherlock “The Empty Hearse,” exploring the shocking surprises the beloved British detective faces when he theatrically “rises from his eternal resting place” and returns to London after an extended and mysterious absence. John Watson always wanted his best friend to resurface, but when the duo reunites at 221B Baker Street, a dangerous terrorist attack threatens London, and Watson learns to “be careful what you wish for,” as nothing is as Sherlock left it.

Eight, Arizona PBS Events and Promotions Coordinator Bob Beard comments on the Sherlock fan phenomenon:

“Arizona Sherlock fans have been clamoring for a new installment of his adventures for almost two years, and with RSVPs for this preview event more than 3/4 full after just a single post on Twitter, we anticipate a crowd of enthusiastic ‘Sherlockians.’ The original Sherlock Holmes stories have long inspired fandom – with over 100 years of history and countless interpretations of the character – including past PBS programs set in Victorian times as well as this one that places Holmes and Watson in modern-day London. Combine this with the fact that Sherlock’s two leading men are a couple of the most popular actors working today (Benedict Cumberbatch – Star Trek: Into Darkness; The Fifth Estate and Martin Freeman – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) and you have anticipation for the new season that is at a fever pitch. As we heard in season 2, ‘Smart is the new sexy’ – and as a station committed to delivering high quality, intelligent programming we agree,” says Beard. “Sherlock is an exceptionally smart and funny show and we’re pleased to bring it to Arizona’s dedicated ‘Sher-flock,’ and to many new viewers, as well.”
