(Phoenix) At its June Open Meeting, the Arizona Corporation Commission approved safety upgrades for three Union Pacific Railroad crossings. Two of the crossings are in Mesa, Arizona and one is in Nogales, Arizona. The Commission approved an upgrade at a four quadrant gate system at Dobson Road where it intersects with Main and with Broadway. New automatic gates with LED flashing lights and bells will be added on the departure side of each crossing. That will deter vehicles from driving the opposite direction and going around the gates when they are down. The City of Mesa will pay $561,000 for the improvements and the upgrades will be completed within the next 15 months.

Upgrades will also take place at a four quadrant gate system at Alma School Road where it intersects with Main Street and Broadway. It will be upgraded with new automatic gates with LED flashing lights units on both sides of the outside edges of the roadway and on the raised medians. Two new cantilevers will also be installed for southbound and northbound traffic lanes along with the installation of concrete panels of the outside edges of the road for new sidewalks. This cost for the project is $749,000 which will be paid for with Federal Highway Administration funds. The upgrades will be completed within the next 24 months.

Court Street in the City of Nogales will get an automatic gate with LED flashing lights. This upgrade will cost $120,000 and will be paid for with Federal Highway Administration funds.   back...
